Das Buch “The Organization Man” von William Whyte, einem der bedeutendsten US-amerikanischen Soziologen, erschien 1956 in USA und wurde zum Klassiker (deutsche Ausgabe “Herr und Opfer der Organisation”, übersetzt von George S. Martin, 1958).
William Whyte entwickelte das Konzept des “Menschen der Organisation”, des Gruppenmenschen, der der Organisation mit Haut und Haar gehört und sich mit der Firma bedingungslos identifiziert. Whyte definierte auch den Begriff der “sozialen Ethik” (bzw. der “Gruppenethik” oder der “bürokratischen Ethik”). Damit meinte er jene Denkweise, die den Druck der Gesellschaft auf den Einzelmenschen moralisch rechtfertigt.
Obwohl das Konzept von “Organization Man” mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert alt ist und trotz des Unterschiedes zur US-amerikanischen Gesellschaft der 50er und 60er Jahre, als selten entlassen wurde, jeder Mitarbeiter ein “Lifetime-Employee” war und sich auf einen langen Lebensweg in der Organisation einstellen konnte, findet man in diesem Konzept viele Parallelen zur modernen Welt.
So schreibt Whyte: “In einer sich so schnell ändernden Welt, in einer Welt, in der immer Bewegung sein muss, braucht der Mensch unbedingt Wurzeln, und die Organisation ist logischerweise der Ort, an dem man sie schlagen soll”. Er hat auch einen Maßstab für die Treue zur Firma genannt – die Anzahl der Leute, die von einer Firma zur anderen übergehen.
Nach Whyte sind einige von den Stellungswechslern die Erfolglosen, „das Treibgut“, aber viele unter ihnen gehören zu den offensichtlich Erfolgreichsten. Die Fähigkeit des Menschen, sich zu verändern, ist für die Firma wie für den Einzelnen, durchaus notwendig, so Whyte.
Dallas Hanson und Wayne O’Donohue (2010) meinen: “The polemic is never more relevant than today because we live in a world in which we are closely surveilled on many levels using ever more sophisticated technology, and in which many human resource management practices increase the power of organization over individual. William Whyte’s time has come”.
Auch die Zeitschrift “Management Revue: the international review of management studies” widmete im Jahr 2010 dem Thema “Organization Man” einen Special Issue.
