Deutsche Unternehmen erleiden jährlich Schäden durch Produktpiraterie in Höhe von schätzungsweise 30 Milliarden Euro. Laut VDMA – Verband der Deutschen Maschinen – und Anlagenbauer – sind circa zwei Drittel der deutschen Investitionsgüterhersteller betroffen. Gleichermaßen werden aber auch intellektuelle und künstlerische Werke kopiert, insbesondere in der Software- und Musikindustrie. Organisationen wie die WTO und die Europäische Kommission gehen von Schäden durch Verletzung gewerblicher Schutzrechte weltweit von rund 300 Milliarden Euro aus. Es geht um Arbeitsplätze, internationale Wettbewerbsfähigkeit, Verbraucherschutz und Produktsicherheit.
