Die Stiglitz-Kommission hat Empfehlungen zur Weiterentwicklung der statistischen Berichterstattung vorgelegt und das Bruttoinlandsprodukt als nicht ausreichenden Maßstab für die Messung der Wirtschaftsleistung, der Lebensqualität und der Nachhaltigkeit bewertet. Tatsächlich gibt es auch in der Bevölkerung ein Unbehagen in Hinblick auf die amtliche Statistik. Allerdings sind Zufriedenheitsindikatoren als alternative Zielwerte für die Politik kritisch zu beurteilen.

The reliability of subjective well-being measures / Alan B. Krueger, David A. Schkade.
This paper studies the test-retest reliability of a standard self-reported life satisfaction measure and of affect measures collected from a diary method. The sample consists of 229 women who were interviewed on Thursdays, two weeks apart, in Spring 2005. The correlation of net affect (i.e., duration-weighted positive feelings less negative feelings) measured two weeks apart is 0.64, which is slightly higher than the correlation of life satisfaction (r=0.59). Correlations between income, net affect and life satisfaction are presented, and adjusted for attenuation bias due to measurement error. Life satisfaction is found to correlate much more strongly with income than does net affect. Components of affect that are more person-specific are found to have a higher test-retest reliability than components of affect that are more specific to the particular situation. While reliability figures for subjective well-being measures are lower than those typically found for education, income and many other microeconomic variables, they are probably sufficiently high to support much of the research that is currently being undertaken on subjective well-being, particularly in studies where group means are compared (e.g., across activities or demographic groups).

Life satisfaction and relative income : perceptions and evidence / Guy Mayraz; Gert G. Wagner; Jürgen Schupp.
In questions inserted into the 2008 module of the German-Socio Economic Panel we ask subjects to report their income relative to different reference groups, such as fellow employees, other people in their profession, same age and same gender groups, friends, and neighbours. In addition subjects report how important to them is each of these comparisons. Using these data we are able to study how important income comparisons are to subjective well-being, and which comparisons are relatively more important. We find substantial gender differences, with income comparisons being much better predictors of subjective well-being in men than in women. Generic (same-gender) comparisons are the most important, followed by within profession comparisons. Once generic and within-profession comparisons are controlled for, income relative to neighbours has a negative coefficient, suggesting that a good quality neighbourhood increases happiness with little loss due to negative relative comparisons. The perceived importance of income comparisons is uncorrelated with actual importance. However, subjects who judge comparisons to be important are significantly less happy than subjects who see income comparisons as unimportant. The marginal effect of relative income on subjective well-being does not depend on whether a subject is below or above the reference group income.

Relative income, happiness, and utility : an explanation for the Easterlin paradox and other puzzles / Andrew E. Clark, Paul Frijters, and Michael A. Shields.
The well-known Easterlin paradox points out that average happiness has remained constant over time despite sharp rises in GNP per head. At the same time, a micro literature has typically found positive correlations between individual income and individual measures of subjective well-being. This paper suggests that these two findings are consistent with the presence of relative income terms in the utility function. Income may be evaluated relative to others (social comparison) or to oneself in the past (habituation). We review the evidence on relative income from the subjective well-being literature. We also discuss the relation (or not) between happiness and utility and discuss some non-happiness research (behavioural, experimental, neurological) dealing with income comparisons. We last consider how relative income in the utility function affects economic models of behaviour in a number of different domains.
